The Agricultural Development Institute of Chile (INDAP) is a dependency of the Ministry of Agriculture, created in 1962 and established by the Organic Law 18.910.

Objectives

The promotion of the economic, social and technological development of the Small Agricultural Producers, in order to rise their business, organizational and commercial capacity, its integration into the rural development process and, at the same time, optimize the use of productive resources.

It aims to end rural poverty by generating of sustainable development policies and integrating the peasantry into its economic growth, modernizing its practices and technologies.


Under this mandate, the institution is empowered to develop a wide range of actions related to productive and rural development and defines the status of its beneficiaries who may be:

Small Agricultural Producer: is the natural person who exploits an area not exceeding 12 Hectares of Basic Irrigation, whose assets do not exceed the equivalent of 3,500 Development Units, whose income comes mainly from the agricultural exploitation, and who works directly on the land, whatever their tenure regime is.

Peasant: is the natural person who usually lives and works in the fields, whose income derives mainly from the agricultural activity carried out in a personal way, whatever the legal status in which it is carried out, provided that their economic conditions are not superior tot hose of a small agricultural producer, and the persons who make up their family.

The INDAP is composed of 16 regional directorates plus 132 agencies and area offices, distributed throughout Chile; and in a central level, where the national authorities and the national managers of the different divisions of work and programs are located.
