FDA Prior Notice

The United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) Prior Notice is a notification provided to the FDA that contains information about imported shipments of food products prior to their arrival to the U.S.

It includes information such as:

  • characteristics of the product itself: quantity, packaging and
  • the shipping company or organization.
  • the owner and the consignee’s data.
  • the anticipated arrival port, date and time.
  • the submitter, the importer as well as the carrier.

The Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002 (the Bioterrorism Act) directs the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as the food regulatory agency of the Department of Health and Human Services, which takes on the protection of the public from a threatened or actual terrorism attack on the U.S. food supply and other food and health-related emergencies.

Supported by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the FDA takes on the control and inspections of the arriving products to help protect the nations food supply against potential risks of imported food into the United States.
