Birdseed comes from the Phalaris canariensis. It grows mostly on winter and spring, and it is native of the Mediterranean region.
Direct uses and industrial application
The seeds are a shiny brown and it is used as bird food, generally mixed with rapeseed and other seeds to cheapen it.
In the Canary Islands, Italy and North Africa, it is used as food. In certain parts of Mexico, it is prepared and sold as street food.
