The Ibero-American Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Services (AICO) is an international, private, non-governmental, collective, voluntary and non-profitable organization that associates and represents the main chambers of commerce, associations, cooperatives and related Spanish or Portuguese speaking entities. It consists of 23 countries from Latin America, the Caribbean, the Iberian Peninsula and Hispanic communities from the United States.

History

AICO emerged from the collective and voluntary will of Ibero-American businessmen, who saw the need to be represented before the international community. Thus, in November 1974, the First Meeting of Ibero-American Chambers of Commerce was convened in Mexico City, where it was specifically proposed the creation of an Association that would bring together all the Chambers and Associations of Commerce existing in Ibero-America. This purpose was crystallized in Spain in June 1975, when it was formally established the Ibero-Amercian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Services (AICO).

Once the Association was inaugurated, it has held its Assemblies uninterruptedly, rotating its Headquarters in the capitals of the countries whose Chambers of Commerce are members.

Objectives

In particular, AICO has the objective of the fulfillment and development of the following activities:

  • The study of the concerning economic activities, international trade, specially on the Ibero-American area.
  • The definition of ideas, studies, projects and initiatives aimed at the progress, stability and dignification of private enterprises and Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Navigation and related entities.
  • The development, organization and celebration, with the required frequency in each case, the Assemblies of Chambers of Commerce and related entities, and Business Meetings of the Ibero-American countries, without prejudice to promote, when circumstances so advise the celebration of the same type of events with entrepreneurs and  and corporations of other geographical areas, or participate in them.
  • And, in general, to promote and carry out all kinds of studies, reports, systems and action plans useful to promote and disseminate the economic development of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries and, especially, of any actions that may contribute to intensify and improve their relations and exchanges in the field of economy.
