Latin American Economic Observatory (OBELA)

The Latin American Economic Observatory (OBELA) is an investigation program that was founded, in 2006, by Oscar Ugarteche from the Economic Investigations Institute, Jorge Schvarzer from the University of Buenos Aires and Fidel Aroche Reyes from the Faculty of economic of the UNAM.

The projects aims to gather relevant information, analyze in detail the situation and fluctuation of the economic reality of the countries of Latin America, to allow a new process of industrialization in the context of the world economy. The OBELA develops its investigation and work from a Latin American perspective for the understanding and solution of economic problems that are common to all countries, and maintains a constant dialogue with the academic sector, government agencies, and civil society organizations. To help respond to and support their demands.

The scope of the Observatory is the 17 countries of continental Latin America plus two Caribbean countries: Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

The organization of the work is through a general coordination, in the Institute of Economic Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico with the collaboration of students and fellows.

The areas of interest of the OBELA are, in general terms:

  1. The impact of export led growth policies and integration agreements. Free Trade Agreements with the United States, the European Union, intra-Latin American and the rest of the world behavior of macroeconomic variables, such as wages, employment, gender balance, emigration and remittances, income from drug trafficking, tax collection and tax exemptions, and economic growth.
  2. State financing through external and internal sources and seeing its development as a resultant variable whose conduct depends on integration schemes.
  3. Economic and financial integration and changing the International Financial Architecture.
  4. New proposals for Latin American economic order and development.
