Green sauce. Uses in the kitchen
It goes very well with some typical dishes of international Mexican cuisine such as tacos, fajitas, quesadillas, huevos rancheros and nachos. It is a sauce to try and experiment because it gets along very well also with meat dishes, salads and rice dishes. Its taste is fresh and slightly spicy.
Another option to use this sauce is to add a touch of lemon juice and a crushed avocado, to give it new aromas and texture.
What is Mexican salsa verde made with?
The base ingredient of the Mexican green sauce is the tomatillo or green tomato, also known as leaf tomato or miltomate, is a species of tomato native to Mexico and of pre-Columbian tradition. It is a green and spherical fruit, it has a thin, paper-like skin that is easily removed. Its taste is a little more sour and less sweet than that of ripe tomatoes. It has a slightly watery and dense, bright-colored pulp that slightly darkens during cooking.
In addition to being used to prepare salsa verde, tomatillo can also be prepared whole (fried or roasted) or cut into slices and sauteed.
It goes very well to prepare curry or to add to vinaigrettes thanks to the acidic touch. It can be accompanied with barbecues, along with peppers and onions. You can also try it on toast accompanied by some creamy ingredient or feta cheese with a little olive oil.
