Mate cocido ("brewed mate") is a different and practical way to enjoy yerba mate, which is originally prepared with loose yerba mate leaves. The only difference is in the grinding. For mate cocido, yerba mate leaves are processed and classified, eliminating sticks and dust.
In 1965, Establecimiento Las Marías made yerba mate preparation easier by creating yerba mate in tea bags. The manufacturing process is exactly the same as traditional yerba; the only difference is at the mill, where yerba mate leaves are treated and classified to eliminate chips, fiber and dust.
