The almond, whose scientific name is Prunus dulcis, is a tree native to Iran and surrounding countries of the Levant (or Middle East: Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, among others). The plant has been spreaded by humans in ancient times along the shores of the Mediterranean into northern Africa and southern Europe, and then transported to other parts of the world, at first to Europe, mostly to Greece and the city of Rome. The Romans were responsible for the distribution of this crop in the rest of Europe, mainly to Spain whose agro-ecological conditions were ideal. The Spanish Jesuits were the ones who brought the plant to the US, more precisely to California, which is currently the largest production center of the world.

Although almonds are commonly referred to as nuts, they’re actually the seeds found at the center of the almond fruit, which closely resembles a peach. After harvesting, almonds are hulled and dried before different methods are used to extract their oil. Nearly half of a dried almond’s weight is oil. The oil is obtained after pressing the almond with low heat. This process helps almond oil retain much of its nutrient content.

Almond oil has always been used as a natural ingredient for hair and skin care. Due to its hydrating properties, it can be used as a hair mask for dry scalp. It also provides shine and softness to your hair. It is also moisturizer and it can be mixed with body cream to hydrate the skin. For skin care, it also helps to prevent the appearance of stretch marks. Also, due to its high content of Omega 3, Omega 6 and vitamin E, it improves the appearance of irritated skin, wounds, scars and dermatitis. During the past years, it gained popularity as a natural eyelash strengthener and also as lip balm, mainly in areas where weather is dry.
