Hazelnut is the nut-like fruit of the common hazelnut tree. It consists on an external fibrous shell that surrounds a smooth cover in which the seed is located.

Direct uses and industrial applications

The kernel of the seed is edible as a dried fruit, and it can be consumed both raw and cooked (whole or in paste). The dark skin that covers the seed has a bitter taste so it is sometimes removed for consumption.

You can also obtain the hazelnuts' oil, which is of a strong and characteristic flavor that is used for cooking and baking. They are widely used in confectionery, caramelized or mixed with chocolate. It is one of the main ingredients of spreadable cocoa creams or similar, such as Nutella, Nocilla or Duvalin. It is also one of the main ingredients of the Viennese torts.

About every part of the hazelnut can be used: the shells are used in the making of fuel, the leaves are food for the cattle, the bark and leaves are used to make Coagulant and the wood in which the fruit is wrapped is also used to make small wooden objects.
