The Family that Sells Churros and Messi Changed Their Life Forever

In less than four months, Sofía and Federico's life changed dramatically. The couple from Santa Fe started their business selling churros nine years ago. Since they opened their shop in the city of Funes, the proximity to the gated community where Lionel Messi spends his days every time he comes to Argentina, led them to dream of giving him several dozen to enjoy with the family.

A path of attempts

"We were in the middle of the process of changing the pipes, which the previous owner was going to recognize as part of the agreement, but those who were in charge later did not accept the same terms, so we left, and we spent almost half a year looking for a place", they say. They found a house with a store where they were able to set up the factory, the premises, and they settled there, until the request for three and a half dozen from the Messi family arrived. The request came through WhatsApp, and Sofia was the one who read the message: 24 units of dulce de leche, 12 of pastry cream and six of Nutella, with home delivery.

"We have the same veterinarian with Antonela Roccuzzo's mother, and he made us the link to send her our churros for 6 years, but we only knew that it was such a sector of the country, and that we could bring them to her when they came to Rosario, without expecting anything in return," they explain. Whenever they heard about Messi's arrival, they would send them as a gift a dozen filled with pastelera, another simple one, another with dulce de leche, another simple one, another with pastelitos, another with torta fritas, and one more with tequeños. "We knew that a lot of people were going, that there were many siblings and cousins, so we sent them all, almost like for an event," they confess.

He went to the exact address, knocked on the door and Antonela came out to receive the churros. "Juampi started crying, he asked her if he could give her a hug, she said yes, he saw Messi passing behind, he waved from afar, and Mateo also gave him a hug because he saw him crying," says Sofia. The boy returned to the churreria extremely moved, and the couple replied to the chat on WhatsApp with a heartfelt thank you. "We can't stop crying from the emotion since the cadet came back, to know that you are enjoying our product, thank you very much for trusting us; whenever you want to enjoy them they will always be available and waiting for you. Thank you very much, you changed our day, our year, our life", they wrote, and as if everything that had happened was not enough, they replied: "They were delicious".

The day that changed everything

A week later, Jorge Messi stopped by the store with his grandchildren, Thiago, Mateo and Ciro, to buy another portion of churros. "We can't explain how happy we are to know that they liked them, and we can't stop being surprised by the number of people who come every day, and not only to buy, but they also bring proposals to make investments", they assure. The demand grew so much that in a matter of four months they opened a second store, moved out of their house and converted it into a warehouse, and went from having a work team of seven people to a total of 25.

"The growth of the business has been tremendous, we have been receiving queues of people who want to set up a franchise, they constantly offer us to sell our products in their premises, and crazy things happen to us: they even offered us to sell our churros in Iceland", says Sofía, between disbelief and amazement. The infrastructure also became bigger: they rented two food trucks for events, and in the second location they added a cafeteria so that customers can enjoy a complete snack, not only with the famous churros, but also with a pastry and bakery sector.
